Music and Sound Effects in Sci-Fi Films

Sound effects that are used in sci-fi films could be:

The sound of an alien/monster voice. This is used to build suspense to scare the audience and keep them interested e.g. Alien

Mechanical sounds for robots  are used to create the realistic feeling for them e.g. Terminator.


Screeching noises can be used to make the audience feel uncomfortable.


Sound effects for advanced weapons are used to make it feel more futuristic e.g. Light saber from Star Wars


Gun fire/explosion to add to the intensity of a scene

 I think this "alien:isolation" trailer has some really good sounds capturing the surrounding. for example high pitch sounds make the audience feel jumpy and on edge.

What does the 15 symbol mean?

No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.

What might I see in a 15 rated film or video?

Any of the following:

•   strong violence
•  frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
•   portrayals of sexual activity
•   strong verbal references to sex
•   sexual nudity
•   brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
•   discriminatory language or behaviour
•   drug taking

How much strong language is allowed in a 15?

There could potentially be a great deal. At 15 there is no upper limit on the number of uses of strong language (e.g. ‘f***’).
Occasionally there may be uses of the strongest terms (e.g. 'c***'), depending on the manner in which they are used, who is using the language, its frequency and any special contextual justification. However, continued or aggressive use will not normally be passed 15.

What about discriminatory or offensive terms?

There may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory language, and the work could explore themes relating to this.
However, at 15 the work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

How much sex and nudity is allowed at 15?

At 15 sexual activity can be portrayed, but usually without strong detail. Some sex scenes can be quite long at this category. Though nudity may be allowed in a sexual context there will usually be no strong deta

il. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. There can be strong references to sex and sexual behaviour, but especially strong or crude references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified by context. Sex and sex references are treated the same irrespective of sexuality

What about sexual violence?

There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence (for example descriptions of rape or sexual assault in a courtroom scene or in victim testimony) but any portrayal depiction of sexual violence must be discreet and justified by context.

What about dangerous behaviour or things teens might copy?

We consider the risk of potential harm to impressionable teenagers. For example, dangerous behaviour such as hanging, suicide and self-harming should not dwell on detail which could be copied.
Whether the depiction of easily accessible weapons is acceptable will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting.

The title sequence starts off very dark, in the background their appears to be some kind of object that seems to be quite shiny and pristine but at the moment it is difficult to distinguish what it is.






After that it then dissolves into the following shot. As you can see on the image the object appears to be some sort of diamond or crystal. Or perhaps it could even be glass.







Then after the that the shot becomes more clear and it makes you think that it is most definitely a diamond or something valuable.

In the next part of the title sequence the camera zooms out and from what you can see it appears to be cubes of ice with some sort of drink. I think this is very smart because at first the camera work makes you think one thing but then after that you realise its something completely different.





The reason for me liking this specific title sequence is because at the start you get a vague vision on the object and then throughout the title scene the object becomes a bit more clear and makes you think that it is something very valuable but then towards the end you realise that what you once thought was valuable is just cubes of ice in a glass whiskey.

What does the 12A logo mean?

Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to
 view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child. To help them decide, we recommend that they check the BBFC insight for that film in advance. 

What's the difference between 12A and 12?

The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. This is enforced by cinema staff and a cinema may lose its license if adult accompaniment is not enforced for children under 12 admitted to a 12A film. Accompanied viewing cannot be enforced in the home, so the 12 certificate remains for DVD/Blu-ray, rather than the 12A. The 12 is also a simpler system for retailers. It means they cannot sell or rent the item unless the customer is over the age of 12.

Is there a lower age limit for a 12A film?

No. However, the BBFC considers the content of 12A rated films to be suitable for children aged 12 and over, and we would not recommend taking very young children to see them. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them.

The plot was inspired by an event where the director was mugged himself, and after adding the science fiction angle into the plot, Joe Cornish interviewed various kids in youth groups in order to find out what kind of weapons they would use if a real alien invasion occurred. Cornish also based the character of the stoner Brewis on himself in his twenties.

The irresponsible guardian (usually the dad character) that steps up when family needs him as the events of the story unfolds.

- The stubborn moody  teenager that deep down cares about their family and we see this during the progression of the story. 

- Military that gets overpowered by the enemy because the alien technology is far more advanced than human technology.

- Powerful Alien beings far more advanced than humans.
