This Is England - trailer

Warp is possible distributer for our film.Warp Films is an independent film production company based in Sheffield & London, UK, with a further affiliated company Warp Films Australia based in Melbourne, Australia. Warp Films was established by Warp Records founding partners Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett. It was initially created with financial support from  and had a remit to produce a number of short films. After the death of Rob Mitchell in 2001, Beckett decided to continue with Warp Films and enlisted the expertise of Sheffield friend Mark Herbert (who had just produced the critically acclaimed first series of Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights for channel 4) to run the company.

Some films Warp have produced:
This is England
Four Lions
Submarine
Kill List
This is England 66'
This is England 68'

This is a possible distributor for our film because we only have a low budget. Another reason it would be suitable is because we don't have the equipment needed for special effects. Also, due to us living in a local area where the company is based, this can attract a small, target, british audience. Although warp has not yet released any movies similar genres to ours, I feel that ours will allow them to produce a larger variety of genres ultimately increasing their profits and receiving more recognition from a larger target audience.

Script (Draft 1)

Costume For Our Alien

This is a good alien mask we could use for the silhouette as the shape will convey to our audience the moment we show the silhouette will recognize it as an alien life form or other external monster.

Sounds in Sci-Fi Films

In the Star Wars movies, the appearance of the villains onscreen is likewise accompanied by deep or military sounds. What most audience members don't notice is that most protagonists also have their own theme music. The main Star Wars theme, written by John Williams, plays whenever Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia face important decisions, and when Obi Wan Kenobi dies.

The old Star Trek series, when the soundtrack used to be composed by a live orchestra watching the film footage. Bach character had his or her own individual theme music, which was always  played whenever they were on screen. Mr Spock's theme, for example, is played by ''an instrument that couldn't possibly be romantic, a bass guitar, down in the low register, with no resonance. It just klunks out the theme'' Star Trek Classic also played with the voices of alien characters. They would electronically raise or lower the voices of these actors to create an inhuman effect.

Mise en scene for our film

Costume
For our costume in the shot with Brandon and myself we are in bed so we want the audience to know that it is night time , so wearing PJ's similar to these will help the audience believe it's at nighttime.

  •  casual attire, simple trouser bottoms and T-shirt
  • for Brandon's attire (male) a simple jumper and trouser bottoms.

the pinkish red trousers are for the female character, also to stereotype that females like the colour pink. The males trousers are blue, this is an example of primary socialization; due to the fact  that parents always choose the colour blue if they have a baby boy and this continues to influence the child growing up, until the individual' will naturally believe that the colour blue is only for boys and pink for girls. In our film we are not subverting any stereotypes of females and males. as it will feel more natural for the audience to relate and understand.

Setting
The setting of the film is based in England in what is suppose to be a loving home of two individuals who love each other. The house has the basic touch's of what a couples house should look like. In the room there is a bedside table on booth sides. more often than not couples have a bedside table on their side and i thought it would be a good idea to make space and fit in two bedside tables.

lighting

the location setting that we have chosen is based in loving home that we are trying to create by using modern props. when designing the house i will try and make sure that the house is going to be quite modern  so that this tells the audience that this film is set in this era. We want the house/room that we are shooting in,  that  to feel nice and quite naturalistic, however after the alarm clock falls off the bed side table. After this happens we want to make the audience to feel the tensity in the room. we aim to keep the lighting quite dark (low key lighting ) to create a sinister feel throughout, however when our character is in a shot we are going to use a high key lighting;so that all of the face expressions are captured clearly. We are going to be shooting at night time this adds extra tension and suspense that something is going to happen, we want the audience to feel on edge and think about what is happening.

The low key lighting tends to give high contrast being one light it directs the lighting at one part of the face making it very on one side strong to human eye
High key lighting is a completely different type of lighting as instead of using one light source many are use. This is to capture a moment in very high contrast on the whole of the subject whatever it maybe.By using reflectors and minimilisers this reduces the chance of shadows being produce and makes a sharp and crisp image or scene.By using filters any hard light on low key will gone on high key lighting.

The way in which high key lighting is represented is r with three to four lights all focused around the subject. These are the fill light;this a light usually to the side of where the subjects are that stops them so that the only shadows you see are natural. However we have tried our best to make sure that there are no shadows in the shots.

Due to the fact that our film is meant to look sinister, we will use is an LED light. This little but powerful light is great for placing it anywhere in a scene unnoticed as it is portable but also can you change it brightness to get the lighting that we want.

The next light we will use is a standard table lamp. We made this light  by attaching blue shades with duct tape. we did this so that it would make our scene look more blue to add  a sci-fi theme to the scene.

props
For our film the props that we will need are basic.
The props that are included.

a family lamp as furniture;internal setting this is so that the photo frame and the picture is show in the shot. The light of the lamp is a good source. This is an example of an incident light ( alight source)

However we have now decided that it would be better if the lamp did not come on when Adam ( Brandon's character ) leans over to turn it on; as it would create more suspense and make the audience feel on edge; as they suspect that there is something wrong.

The curtain is a prop that is needed to set the perfect home feeling, one of the reasons that this is one of our props is that it will make the the room look more homely and realistic.
Another reason for the curtain is for the lighting. Our film is about an alien who attacks at night, this mean that the our filming time is very limited, that is why thick curtains are important. It helps us to film during days as well as night.

The shower curtain are also used to diffuse the lighting when are  filming. This also helps us to keep the colour temperature the same throughout the bedroom scene.
It is the colour white so that the alien;s shadow is actually seen. We are going to put them them on the window outside and are going to use a fill lighting technique that will portray the aliens shadow in a realistic way. The back light is placed behind the subject and lights it from the rear. Rather than providing direct lighting (like the key and fill), its purpose is to provide definition and subtle highlights around the subject's outlines. This helps separate the subject from the background and provide a three-dimensional look.

Research into the certificate of our film

Certificate for our Films

What the 12A mean?
Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is suitable for that child.

What is the difference between 12A and 12?
The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. This is enforced by cinema staff and a cinema may lose its license if adult accompaniment is not enforced for children under 12 admitted to a 12A film. Accompanied viewing cannot be enforced in the home, so the 12 certificate remains for DVD/Blu-ray, rather than the 12A. The 12 is also a simpler system for retailers. It means they cannot sell or rent the item unless the customer is over the age of 12.

How important is the tone of a film at 12A or 12?
The overall tone of a film or video, and the way it makes the audience feel may affect the classification. For example, a work which has a very dark or unsettling tone which could disturb the audience would be less likely to be passed 12A even if the individual issues in the film were considered acceptable under the BBFC Guidelines. Similarly, if a work is particularly positive or reassuring this may stop it being pushed up a category from 12A to 15.

Will there be uses of strong language in a 12A or 12 work?
The BBFC's Guidelines state that strong language (e.g. 'f***') may be passed at 12 or 12A, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency and any special contextual justification. Aggressive uses of strong language may result in a film or DVD being placed at the 15 category. There is some allowance for puns on strong language at this category. There may be moderate language (e.g. uses of terms such as ‘bitch’ and ‘twat’ at 12 or 12A).

Sci fi film ideas (similar films)

I like some of these shots from this trailer, because it makes the audience question if there is alien life upon us, this makes them more intrigued and wanting them to watch it as they may want to find out more
I also think it gives good ideas for the types of settings that is used.

I think the sounding that they use is to capture the audience attention , Even though this non diegetic sound  is not suitable with our two minutes film, i still think it goes with the trailer and makes it effective as it creates tension.

Title Sequence Analysis

A title sequence I saw recently which I like was the title sequence to a TV show called 'Peaky Blinders'. This title sequence saves time in the show by following the characters round the setting in the opening scene. Each title is different as they are in a new setting to continue with the story and not waste 1-2 minutes of the show by having the same title sequence play in the beginning. The genre of the show is completely different to our sci-fi opening but I think we could incorporate a similar title sequence into our opening as I believe that the title sequence in Peaky Blinders has worked well at intriguing the audience with their sequence.

The title sequence starts out with a man on a horse going down an old dirt road while the locals begin the leave their houses.

The location of the setting appears on the screen in an old english font written in white to contrast with the background as the music begins to play and continues to play as the man on the horse carries on travelling.

We  hear diegetic noises like like the horse galloping, the locals talking and miners working. The use lots of longs shots to this is a good way to establish the setting they are in which is Birmingham, England 1919, post WW1.

Once the man on the horse has reached his destination the screen fades to black and the title appears on screen.

Audience Target Group

for our film I think that we should our target audience should be people with the age range of 12 to 40 onwards, I think this an appropriate age group because it creates a mass of audience that may be interested.

because our film is not going to have any swearing or violence in any scenes I  think the age 12 and over is suitable.

Region for our film will be for a global audience, however we are planning on attracting the UK audience for now.
Gender  our target gender for the film is mixed, we have included both sex's in the film so we hope that the target gender group falls in to both categories. It may appeal to men more because of the action that comes with the film, however the action might appeal to some women as well.

Title Sequences

I looked on www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2009/july/film-titles-list and www.artofthetitles.com for different title sequences to find one that we could create a similar one to. There are a few title sequences I like for specific reasons which create the tone and style of the film before you even start it. The 3 title sequences I like that will fit the style of our film are:

Se7en -  I like this title sequence for the font they use mixed with the background to create this sketchy mysterious look which I think would look great if we incorporate a title sequence similar to this one.

It Might Get Loud - I like the idea of different but similar style fonts for the part of the credits. This would be fun but may be confusing and misleading to our story if they create the sense of a different genre than Sci-fi.

JCVD - this title sequence displays the credits along with the storyline as the characters moves around. This would be the most beneficial to our film as we can used the credits in the progression of our story which will save time for us to film more to convey our story to the audience.

Audience Profile for our Film

For our audience profile I believe we should target a specific audience:

Age - The target audience age we should aim for is 12 - 30, I believe this age group is suitable as sci-fi genres are popular mostly between these ages and I believe our film will be able to target this age range as we will have it on a serious matter for the adults but keep it simple and entertaining for our younger audience. Our decided certificate is a 12/12a as we won't be having any explicit language or use of drugs and minimal violent scenes.

Gender - The target gender of our film is not going to play a big part in how we construct our film but our target we hope for is both but I feel that it will lean towards the male gender as the cast we have will include more males than females, our movie will appeal more to males but certain females will also enjoy the movie.

Education - I believe that the majority of the viewers of our film will  be in some sort of education. This will include students from high school to university students, I think college and university students are our best audience as they can be in many enrichments such as film clubs which are quite popular in universities.

Region - We will aim for a global audience but our film will most likely target audiences from England as all of our cast is English.

Interest - The audience for this film is for people who like the sci-fi genre or just have an interest in the unknown as our film is based on unknown life forms taking humans in the middle of the night. Sci-fi usually represent an idea of a 'nerd' or a 'geek' but our film will subvert from the typical sci-fi films like star wars or star trek to attract a wider range of an audience.

Style of Sci-Fi Films

Sci-fi films styles depend on the director but usually still have similar way to convey the sci-fi genre.

Lighting is used effectively by different directors in different ways with bright blue and white lights as a sign of stars in space or aliens or low key lighting the dark to establish the unknown threat in the beginning e.g. Alien.

The technology used also affects the type of film it could be from steam and atomic power technology to advanced technology e.g. the matrix

Settings in Sci-Fi Films

Different settings are used in Sci-fi films depending on the sub-genre:
The general settings include houses, schools, streets, highways.
- Spaceships are used either in space travelling through the galaxy, in earths orbit or even on earth. e.g. Skyline
- Scientific labs are used for the smartest human characters during sci-fi films to create something to help or fight against the aliens. e.g.
- Military bases are used if a character get captured or if the government has taken the alien hostage. e.g. Super 8.
- Farm area or Barns are used as a common old fashioned setting from the earlier sci-fi films.
